Can information be shared between credits?

Several STARS credits ask for data that is required in the PRE section or another STARS credit. In order to easily share this data between credits, you can use the “Copy from” buttons to automatically copy your data.

Version 3.0

Gross floor area and employee and student full-time equivalent figures can be copied from PRE into other credits:

Gross floor area of building space is reported under the following credits:

  • PRE 3: Institutional Demographics
  • OP 3: Water Use
  • OP 5: Energy Use
  • OP 6: Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • OP 12: Waste Generation & Recovery

Employee and Student FTE figures are reported under the following credits:

  • PRE 3: Institutional Demographics
  • OP 3: Water Use
  • OP 5: Energy Use
  • OP 6: Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • OP 12: Waste Generation & Recovery
  • OP 14: Commute Modal Split

Generally speaking, these figures should be consistent across credits if the same performance year is being used. To simplify reporting, the Reporting Tool will allow you to copy the figures reported under the Institutional Characteristics into other credits. If it is necessary to deviate from one or more PRE figures when completing a credit, the rationale for doing so should be recorded in the Notes field for the affected credits (e.g., difference in reporting timeframe).

Version 2.2

Am I required to report identical amounts across credits in a single report?

No. There may be situations in which the data you wish to provide for a credit will not match the PRE or other section. For instance, a valid (and common) reason for figures to differ is using a different performance year for a particular credit.  Some institutions opt to stagger assessments across multiple years to even out the sustainability reporting workload and still meet timeframe standards. In such cases, you would simply enter the correct data without copying in any information. In situations where you are using the same performance year, but the data you copy in must be edited (for example, when a credit specifically allows some building space or people to be excluded), we recommend explaining the discrepancy in the Notes field of the credit(s).
