Webinar: Sustainability Engagement Tracking for STARS 3.0

In anticipation of changes to Campus Engagement credits in STARS 3.0, Santa Clara University’s Center for Sustainability pivoted our methods of tracking participation in sustainability activities from “tallying attendance” to tracking who exactly was attending our events and Forge garden volunteering, leading to data that shows who are one-off engagers and who are top engagers. Since our pilot in the 2022-23 academic year, we have tracked 1,712 unique attendees with a breakdown of undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members.

This session will provide an overview of the new 3.0 credit language for “Percentage of students that participate in sustainability activities” and “Percentage of employees that participate in sustainability activities” within the Campus Engagement category. The session will dive into SCU’s methodology for collecting data at sustainability programs, current data visualizations using Tableau, potential uses of the data, lessons learned from our two years of tracking, and next interactions with more refined demographic data.

Workshop: STARS 3.0 Data Quality – Training & Certification for Submitters & Reviewers

This workshop offers strategies and tools to develop and hone literacy around STARS version 3.0, with the ultimate goal of helping institutions efficiently submit, review and publish high-quality and accurate reports.

This workshop will cover the basic principles of STARS data quality, the review and revision process, differences under version 3.0, important deadlines, and integral data quality resources. It will address common issues that apply to all credits and will include a closer review of specific credits as requested by workshop registrants. Attendees will learn about strategies for building effective partnerships between STARS institutions and report reviewers.

This workshop is specific to STARS version 3.0, and is ideal for STARS liaisons, data collectors and prospective report reviewers working under that version. Participation in this workshop is required for individuals wishing to earn a STARS Data Quality certificate (recognized under the Data Quality Certificate bonus credit).

A virtual option for this workshop is available for individuals with scheduling conflicts or for those in distant time zones. A pay-what-you-can option is also available. Webinar: The Power of Collaboration in the Path to STARS Gold and Beyond, With Insights on STARS 3.0

In this webinar, we highlight how the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Virginia (UVA) conducted STARS report peer-reviews, and we detail the processes by which we each achieved our STARS Gold Ratings in 2024. We first detail each of our separate paths toward achieving our recent STARS Gold ratings and emphasize the power of collaboration (internal and external) and the use of STARS to leverage institutional sustainability goals. Then, we discuss how we coordinated our peer-review process and lessons learned from the valuable peer-review feedback. We also discuss the final report review process by AASHE staff and outline what to expect in this final review process.

Finally, looking ahead to future STARS reports, we each discuss how USC and UVA are preparing for the new STARS 3.0 version and highlight critical areas of action for each of our institutions in the path toward STARS platinum ratings. The webinar will conclude with sufficient time for questions and insights from participating attendees.
